Nimal Lakshapathiaarachi passes away

Leading radio and TV personality Nimal Lakshapathiarachchi, 57 died yesterday of a sudden heart attack.
Nimal who first joined the SLBC in 1978 as a sound controller, quickly made his mark as an announcer, dramatist, news editor, and stage actor.
He then served TNL radio and Maharaja Group, where he helped to launch the country’s first FM broadcasting service. Later he played a pioneering role in launching the Sirasa TV for the group. He was rewarded by the Maharaja Group by elevating him as a group director.
Between 2001 and 2002 he rejoined SLBC/Rupavahini as Director General. He last served as the launch director of the Hiru TV of the ABC media group. After completion of that task he attended to his personal media work.
Born on November 22, 1954, he had his primary schooling at Ananda Sastralaya, Kotte and had his secondary education at Ananda College.
Nimal, who returned from a visit to Germany on Thursday, was rushed to a private hospital with a heart ailment, but expired within an hour of admission. He leaves behind his wife and two children.
His body is lying at their residence at 40/7 Bullers Lane, Colombo 07 and the funeral will take place on Monday.
