A soldier attached to Welikanda Army Camp was arrested for molesting a 15-year-old girl, who was on her way to school yesterday morning at Sinhapura.
Police spokesman SP Ajith Rohana said that the soldier had made the victim fall from her bicycle around 6.45 a.m. near the Veterinary office in the Welikanda police area and then dragged her to a nearby forest.
Some passengers in a bus going toward Sinhapura from the Welikanda bus stand had seen the incident and acted swiftly to nab the soldier, the police said.
He said that the suspect was handed over to the Welikanda Army camp and the police was informed by the girls’ rescuers. Later, the suspect was arrested by the Welikanda police while fleeing from the camp along a road near the Welikanda playground.
Military Spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya said that the soldier in question had left the camp after applying for leave early that morning and was at the bus stand to return home when the alleged incident had taken place. He added that the soldier was a married man with a child.
He said that the military police too was conducting investigation into the matter.
The victim was admitted to the Welikanda Hospital for a medical examination and the Welikanda police was conducting further investigation, SP Rohana said.
